The mental health of fly-in fly-out workers before and during COVID-19: a comparison study (2023)

Research by Curtin University and the University of Western Australia found FIFO workers had worse mental health than a matched benchmark sample pre COVID, and mental ill health and poor wellbeing were higher during the COVID-19 pandemic than before. This group needs to be considered as an at-risk group for adverse mental health outcomes.

Rio Tinto releases external review of workplace culture

Rio Tinto published a comprehensive external review of its workplace culture, commissioned as part of its commitment to ensure sustained cultural change across its global operations. The review carried out by former Australian Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick, identified disturbing findings of bullying, sexual harassment, racism and other forms of discrimination. The review is part of the work being undertaken by Rio Tinto’s Everyday Respect task force launched in 2021 to better understand, prevent and respond to harmful behaviours in the workplace.
